To view the new HD guide and browse through it, you must connect the HD TV to the Set Top Box via High Definition Multimedia Interface cable or HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface), or through a component cable.

Also you will have to verify that the display settings (video) in the Set Top Box are “Off”. Menu>Settings> Display> Video, original mode Off.

Remember: In order to correctly set up all these options, your TV should be tuned in a High Definition (HD) channel.

Before you start, make sure and determine whether your Set Top box and TV are either Standard Definition (SD) or High Definition (HD). This will help you determine which cable will be used to connect the Set Top Box directly to the TV.
Remember that to see the guide in HD or High Definition programming, you need a HD Set Top Box, an HD TV and an HDMI cable.

I. Connecting a standard Set Top Box or a standard DVR Set Top Box to a Standard Definition TV (or a HD TV set of 480i resolution).

RECOMMENDED!
Option 1:Using an RCA cable (Component or composite). This option supports standard definition video and stereo audio (not Dolby Digital).

How to connect: Connect the yellow, white, and red ends of the RCA cable to the corresponding output ports (white, yellow and red) for (A / VOUT) on the back of your Set Top Box. Connect the other end of the cable into the appropriate input port (A / VIn) in the back of your TV.

Note: If you do not see a clear image, the input configuration on your TV may be incorrect (e.g., Video 1). You can change your TV input using the TV remote control or manually by pressing the Input/source, TV / VCR, or A / V on the control panel.

Option 2: Using a coaxial cable. This option supports standard definition video and mono audio.

How to Connect: Connect one end of the cable into the port “TV out “in the back of your Set Top Box. Connect the other end of the cable into the "In from Antenna" on the back of your TV.

The ports to be used are: For the TV: “Ant in” and for the Set Top Box “Out to TV”.

Option 2: Using a coaxial cable. This option supports standard definition video and mono audio.

Use the TV's remote control (not your DIRECTV remote) to tune to channel 3 or 4.

II. Connecting an HD Set Top Box or an HD DVR Set Top Box to an HD TV

RECOMMENDED!
Option 1:Using an HDMI cable. This option supports HD video and Dolby Digital audio.

How to Connect it: Connect one end of the cable into the HDMI port on the back of your Set Top Box. Connect the other end of the cable into the HDMI port on the back of your TV.

Note: If you do not see a clear image, the input configuration on your TV may be incorrect (e.g., Video 1). You can change the input on your TV with the TV remote control or manually by pressing the input source, TV / VCR, or A / V on the control panel of the TV.

Note that if the connection is via an HDMI cable, the input channel is HDMI 1, 2, and 3. Always check where the cable was connected to the TV.

Option 2: Using RCA cables (Component)

This option supports high definition video and audio. You need two sets of RCA cables.

How to Connect: Connect the green, blue and red ends of the RCA Cable to the output ports in green, blue and red accordingly. Connect the other end of the cable into the corresponding input ports on the back of your TV.

For audio, connect the red and white ends of the second cable to the output ports red and white on the back of your Set Top Box. Connect the other end of the cable into the corresponding input ports on the back of your TV. Do not use the yellow end of the cable.

Adjust the resolution of the TV to 1080i or to 720p.

Note: If you do not see a clear image, the input configuration on your TV may be incorrect (e.g. Component 1). You can change the input on your TV with the TV remote control or manually by pressing the Input , Source , TV / VCR , or A / V on the control panel of the TV .

The Info Bar (or Channel Banner) of the new HD UI interface displays options such as Favorites, Latest 4 channels, messages, Info, Subtitle, Audio / Video, Parental Control. Important: The option "Messages" is not active.

The new configuration option called “Power Save “will allow you to enable or disable the 4 hour Standby option. This new feature allows the Set Top Box go to Standby mode to save power after 4 hours without use. The “Standby” mode turn off the Set Top Box without turning off the cable box tuners so you will not miss the live programming. This new option can be set up in the Set Top Box.

What's on this morning / afternoon / evening?
This section provides a quick and easy access to programs that are mostly seen regularly on DIRECTV programming.
An important aspect is that the title of this section adapts itself according to the schedule in which the program is being viewed. For example, if the user sees My MiDIRECTV in the afternoon, the title of this section will be “What’s on this afternoon?”, and so on subsequently.

This section supports the discovery of new programs that can be pleasing to the viewer or user. Its function primarily is summarized as follows:
Expands the user's viewing experience.
Displays the richness and variety of DIRECTV programming.

Note: MiDIRECTV is only available for HD DVR subscribers.

In these cases you will see two different guides. In SD Set Top Box the guide will remain SD or standard resolution, while the HD Set Top Box will show up the new HD Guide.

In these homes it will not be possible to enjoy HD content in HD because to appreciate HD programming through DIRECTV HD Set Top Box it is also necessary to have a HD TV. However, the guide is displayed with the new design and features. The programming can keep watching without any problem.

The resolution of the Guide will be displayed in a standard format SD (480i). Meanwhile, in a DVR Set Top Box a standard resolution will be observed, i.e. 480i on the front panel.

Note: By design, the resolution cannot be verified in the front panel of Set Top Box LH26 (HD Only).

Due to current technological capabilities of SD Set Top Boxes, they do not support the HD guide, so you cannot view the new HD Guide on these devices.

Possible Causes:
The batteries may not have been inserted correctly.

High Definition Digital Television is the form of television with the highest resolution currently available. Image quality is four times greater than standard resolution; to enjoy it an HD television set is required. Audio quality is also distinctly enhanced, and some broadcasts are also available with Dolby 5.1 sound.

Standard television provides an analog image transformed into digital. The image of a conventional DVD is SDTV. An analog image is composed of 480 lines, while a High Definition image can have up to 1080 lines, making possible a dramatic image with much more detail.

It is possible to watch programming in High Definition on a standard TV, but the image will not be in High Definition. The DIRECTV receiver changes the digital signal into analog resulting in a standard television image.

Interlaced divides each frame into two fields. In the first field, the even-numbered lines making up the complete image would be displayed, and then with the second field, the odd-number lines of that image would be shown. That means that in standard television, where video is interlaced, only half of the possible resolution is displayed. So, this procedure will trick the eye into thinking it's seeing twice the resolution actually being displayed.

With progressive, which is the resolution most used for HD monitors, plasma screens or LCD, each resolution line has an image all the time. There are no virtual fields; each frame is a complete image.

Progressive is the best way to see a complete frame all at once on the screen. The specifications for video resolution highlight the number of horizontal lines (480, 720, or 1080), followed by the letter "i" for interlaced video, or the letter "p" for progressive scan. Most television broadcasts are done in 480i, some DVD's and the non-HD television use 480p.The standard for HDTV broadcasts requires 1080i or 720p.

The aspect ratio of traditional television is 4:3; almost square. With the advent of digital television, the 16:9 format, also called Widescreen format has become common. Widescreen lets you see more and better because 16:9 aspect ratio surpasses by 30% the 4:3 format used by analog television. DIRECTV allows selecting a variety of display formats.

The standard analog television aspect ratio is 4:3 (almost square). The aspect ratio for most digital TVs is 16:9 (rectangular); it is called "widescreen". The 16:9 aspect ratio is similar to the format of the movies. The quantity of programming now available in 16:9 is increasing. When the programming aspect ratio and the TV set do not match, the top and sides bars of the picture may become visible to avoid distortion of the image.

To properly project 16:9 content on a 4:3 TV, the digital television or digital to analog converter box can display toolbars above or below the image. The result is called "letterbox". Similarly, to display 4:3 content properly on a 16:9 TV, the bars can be located on the sides of the screen, calling the result "pillar-box."

An HDMI cable can carry up to eight digital audio channels. The RCA cable only sends an analog signal and two audio channels. When using RCA cables to connect a High Definition set to a DIRECTV HD receiver, a large loss of image and sound quality occurs.

There is no need to buy a High Definition TV or a digital converter box if the TV is not digital, as the receiver performs this task. However, to enjoy a complete DIRECTV HD experience, an HDTV television set is required.

Analog televisions can be used to watch digital TV. The DIRECTV receiver converts the digital signal to analog. There is no need to get rid of your analog TV. This type of TV set also should continue to work with game consoles, VCRs, DVD players and similar products.

You do not need an HDTV set to watch digital TV. A standard definition TV (a TV with an internal digital tuner) or a digital converter box is everything you need to continue watching "On AIR" television. Digital broadcasting will include Standard Definition Format (SD) and High Definition (HD). You can watch HD programming on a digital television (or an analog TV connected to a converter), but it will not be High Definition.

Digital television sets are "retro-compatible" so your existing analog equipment (VCRs, DVD players, camcorders, video games, etc.) will continue to operate. However, the video will be displayed only at the highest resolution available with each analog product. Manufacturers are producing several different connectors to hook equipment together and improve picture and sound quality when using digital capable television sets with analog devices, such as a VCR.

The biggest difference is in how they are inside. Plasma uses a matrix of cells of electrically charged gas to produce the image, while the LCD screen is composed of a sandwich made of layers of liquid crystal that lies between two glass slides. In general terms, we can say that plasma has better contrast, viewing angle and color, while the LCD is the winner in price, factory resolution, power consumption and weight.

It is a system that provides interference-free digital audio via six separate channels (also called sound 5.1). It's the same format used in cinemas.
